Villa Rio Seco

Where to stay in Sintra with a large group or family

Villa Rio Seco, a 5-bedroom holiday villa in Sintra for groups
In shortFor a large group in Sintra, a private villa usually works better than a hotel. The best areas are the coastal villages of Colares (such as Almoçageme, Praia das Maçãs and Azenhas do Mar), which combine beaches with a short drive to the palaces, or the countryside around Sintra town for more seclusion. Look for enough bedrooms and beds (not just sofa beds), outdoor space, parking for several cars and, outside summer, a pool that can be heated.

Villa or hotel?

For groups of eight or more, a private house is almost always easier. You share a kitchen and a table instead of booking several rooms and coordinating meals, children and older relatives have space, and the cost per person is often lower. Sintra town has few hotels with enough space for a big group together.

The best areas to stay

Colares coast (Almoçageme, Praia das Maçãs, Azenhas do Mar)

Beaches within walking distance, sea views, village cafés and restaurants, and the palaces about 20 minutes away. The best choice if you want to mix sightseeing with beach days.

Sintra town

Walking distance to some sights, but busy with day-trippers, hard for parking, and cooler and damper because of the hills. Better for short stays.

Countryside around Sintra

Quintas and farmhouses with land and privacy, but you will need the car for everything.

What to look for in a group house

  • Real beds for everyone. Count beds, not "sleeps". Five bedrooms with proper beds beat three bedrooms plus sofa beds.
  • Outdoor space for long meals and children.
  • A pool that can be heated, if you are travelling outside July and August. The Atlantic is cold, and an unheated pool is too. With children, check that the pool is fenced.
  • Parking for two or three cars.
  • Distance to the airport. Groups often arrive on different flights.
