Praia Grande, Sintra: a local guide to the beach

Praia Grande beach in Colares, Sintra, with cliffs and Atlantic waves
In shortPraia Grande is the largest beach on the Sintra coast, in Colares, about 40 minutes by car from Lisbon. It is known for surfing and bodyboarding (it hosts an international bodyboard championship in August) and for dozens of dinosaur footprints on the cliff at its southern end, reached by a staircase. From Villa Rio Seco in Almoçageme it is about a 15-minute walk.

Why go to Praia Grande

Praia Grande means "big beach", and it is the largest beach on the Sintra coast. It faces straight into the Atlantic, so there are waves most of the year, which is why surfers and bodyboarders love it. There are cafés and restaurants behind the sand, and the cliffs at both ends make it feel enclosed and dramatic.

Surfing and bodyboarding

Praia Grande is one of the main surf beaches near Lisbon. The waves are usually consistent, and the beach is wide enough that beginners and experienced surfers can find their own space. In August it hosts an international bodyboard championship, one of the best-known events on the Sintra coast. Surf schools operate on the beach in season, so it is an easy place to take a first lesson. Read our guide to surfing in Sintra for more.

The dinosaur footprints

At the southern end of the beach, the rock face rises almost vertically. On it you can see dozens of dinosaur footprints, left when this rock was a horizontal muddy shore and later tilted upright by tectonic movement. A staircase at the south end climbs the cliff, and the top gives one of the best views of the beach and the coast. Children love it.

When to go

  • Summer (June to September): warmest weather and lifeguards on duty. Arrive early on weekends, because parking fills up.
  • Spring and autumn: fewer people and good surf. Many days are warm enough for the beach.
  • Winter: big waves and dramatic walks. Better for watching than swimming.

The Atlantic here is cold, even in summer, and currents can be strong. Swim only where lifeguards indicate.

Getting there and parking
