Where to surf near Sintra

Praia Grande

The best-known surf beach on the Sintra coast. It is wide, faces west into the Atlantic and picks up swell most of the year. It hosts an international bodyboard championship every August. Surf schools run lessons on the beach in season. More in our Praia Grande guide.

Praia das Maçãs

A short drive north, with a more relaxed feel and waves that suit intermediate surfers on many days.

Magoito

Further north, with powerful beach breaks and fewer people. Better for experienced surfers.

When to surf

  • Late spring to early autumn: smaller, more manageable waves and warmer air. The best time for beginners and lessons.
  • Autumn and winter: bigger, more consistent swells. Best for experienced surfers.

The water is cold all year. You will want a full wetsuit, usually 4/3 mm in summer and thicker in winter.

Surf lessons for beginners

Book a lesson with a licensed school on the beach. They provide boards and wetsuits, choose the safest area of the beach that day, and adapt to children and adults. Lessons usually last about two hours, and a few days in a row make a big difference.

Why stay in Almoçageme for a surf trip

Most surf trips near Lisbon mean driving to the coast every day. From Villa Rio Seco you walk to Praia Grande in about 15 minutes, check the waves at breakfast, and come back to a hot shower, a private pool and a garden to dry the wetsuits. With five bedrooms it works well for a surf group or a family where some people surf and others don't.
